WALTER MEEGO LIVE
On the back of the September release of Voyager and sell-out U.S tours with the likes of VHS or Beta and home-grown heroes The Presets, Walter Meego have quickly emerged as everyone’s hot-pick for “It-Band” of 2009. Specialising in effervescent pop and sultry, salacious bass, this Chi-town duo’s music has a special way of flying out your speakers like a Pegasus riding a cheetah. Their first single “Forever” channels The Cars and Nu Shooz and takes you back to decades gone-by with its mix of Yarck’s charming synths and Sconza’s exhilarating vocals. Fresh off the press with some strong remix attention from Van She Tech, Forever has been getting some sweet, sweet love from JJJ in the past few weeks and is set to be the track you just can’t get out of your head this Summer.
OLIVER HUNTEMANN
With an illustrious career spanning well over a decade, Oliver Huntemann (aka H-Man) is indeed a rare-breed in the world of techno. With a swag of original releases on the highly acclaimed Gigolo and Zomba record labels, Huntemann has remained a true beast of the underground scene ever since Styles hit German airwaves way back in 95’. Add to that remixes for the likes of Depeche Mode, Underworld and Chemical Brothers and his highly-prolific concept series Rekorder with Stephan Bodzin and it becomes crystal clear that Huntemann, whose sound “fits perfectly between Chicago, electro and minimal disco” (Groove Magazine), is a bona-fide star. Now after an 18-month hiatus the H-Man is ready to explode at Field Day 09, with new uber-track Dios (his new collaboration with Dubfire) sure to set tongues wagging all across the grassy fields of The Domain.
LADYHAWKE LIVE
Few budding musicians would take their name from a rather strange 80’s fantasy film starring Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfeiffer. Then again Pip Brown aka Ladyhawke, isn’t just your everyday girl-next-door. Born in Wellington, moving to Australia as a teenager and now calling the UK home, Ladyhawke has found herself at the heart of the synth-pop revival ever since the oh-so infectious Paris is Burning created blog-hysteria early this year. Couple that with Back of the Van, My Delirium and Dusk till Dawn, all of which tell tales of broken hearts and form “the perfect soundtrack to Molly Ringwald’s pouts,” (The Guardian) and what are you left with? Not only overwhelming nostalgia but one of the best first-up efforts we’ve heard in the last 5 – 10. Ladies and gentlemen, Ladyhawke, who was recently voted #6 in the NME Cool List of 2008, has most definitely landed.
JD SAMSON (LE TIGRE)
One third of electro-pop-punk feminist supergroup Le Tigre, best known for colossal tracks After Dark, Deceptacon and TKO, and having played keyboards and sampler on Peaches ‘Impeach My Bush’ world tour, JD Samson has never been far from the cutting edge of cool in the popular music. Having DJed solo since 2001 alongside project MEN – a remix/DJ/production partnership with fellow Le Tigre member Johanna Fateman, she is no stranger to the decks or to destroying clubs all over the world with seamless blends and wicked song selections.
BAG RAIDERS LIVE
Fun Punch anyone? Easily one of the most played tracks of the past year, the classically trained duo of Jack Sabbath and Chris Brave followed up this spectacular electro hit with some very handy remixes for Kid Sister, Headman and most recently, The Galvatrons.
Now signed to America’s answer to Ed Banger, Fool’s Gold co-founded by A-Trak who is also playing at Field Day 09. Bag Raiders will be going LIVE at Field Day 09 with keyboards, drum-kits, decks and laptops - we can’t wait to check it out!
AJAX
Ajax spends his time throwing world famous kick-arse parties, releasing hit mix CDs and running the Sweat It Out music label on the side. He mixes it up like no one's business, touring the world and jumping on the festival circuits to show us how to party. Ajax is a constant crowd favourite who always manages to whip any gathering into a crazy frenzy!
MISSION CONTROL LIVE
Mission Control is a quartet of Melbourne gents who have managed to take the geek out of sci-fi with their psychedelic musical offerings, such as their singles Chariots of Fire and Innerspace from their debut Innerspace EP. Placing the Bladerunner soundtrack high on their list of influences, their sound displays echoes of the hypnotic melodies of The Stone Roses, the sci-fi synths of Vangelis and the guitars of Sonic Youth to create a unique and original adventure of soaring choruses, shimmering noise and poignant vocals rising from an electric haze. Having sparked the interest of electronica’s demi-god Zdar of Cassius fame – who names Daft Punk, Air and Phoenix among his production and remix credits – and recently been signed to local label etcetc it seems the only way is up for these lads on their mission to take you to their Innerspace…
THE CANYONS
The two man producer/DJ team of Fred Cherry and Leo Frostwave are better known as The Canyons and they make excellent music that can be enjoyed either seated or in a standing position, with the inevitable result of body movements in time to their beat. The warmth and depth of their sonic offerings will make you feel as though you should be wearing a vintage lounge-suit in a late night bar, fine Cuban on the burn between your fingers – if you’re not already. These young Aussie lads have caused quite a splash internationally with their Lovemore EP, along with singles Apples & Pears and Big City Lights and several remixes for Ladyhawke, Tame Impala and Lost Valentinos keeping them on high rotation of the 1s and 2s of such hipsters as DJ Harvey, Todd Terje and Aeroplane. Live instruments are combined with drum machines, percussion, analogue effects, vocals and samples to create a unique sound that is dirty, dubby, down-tempo disco. It’s refreshing and it’s suave. Yes, suave. And possibly hip too. Time to get that lounge-suit dry-cleaned.
SANTOGOLD LIVE
It’s not too often that big hype is lived up to. In the case of Santogold aka Santi White, this couldn’t be more true. After bursting on to our airwaves in May as JJJ’s Album of the Week, Santogold features production from the very elite (Switch, Diplo, Freq Nasty, XXXChange, Spank Rock) and sees White delve effortlessly into dub, hip-hop and soul whilst still paying homage to her punk-rock roots. From the mesmerizing L.E.S Artistes and Lights Out to the ball-breaking Shove It and smack-you-in-your-face Creator, we can see why famed-producer Mark Ronson not only recruited her for his album Versions, but is also envious of her lack of “care for conforming to mainstream guidelines."
DIGITALISM LIVE
Digitalism are without a doubt one of the world’s hottest electro acts and when they dropped their highly anticipated album Idealism early last year it had everyone jumping up and down like…well…pogo sticks. Producing their instantly recognizable version of rock slash electro and signed to uber-chic French label Kitsune, there’s definitely something in the air when Jence and Isi hit the stage and rock out their incredible live show.
JAMIE LIDELL LIVE
With an unquenchable optimism permeating through all his tracks, Jamie Lidell’s futuristic take on retro is charismatic, captivating and most importantly, clear. Jim, his dazzling follow up to the 2005 hit Multiply, has been touted by some as the “record that Prince never made,” and sees Lidell take uplifting soul to an exciting new level by drawing upon everything from gospel grooves and hillbilly funk to thumping early R & B and synthed-up disco. Now playing the biggest festivals around the world, including Fuji Rock and Lollapalooza, Jamie Lidell will be supporting none-other than Elton John on his forthcoming European tour before treating Australia with his 5-piece live show for the very first time.
BOYS NOIZE
After wowing is us with his headphone-wearing ways at Harbourlife, Boys Noize aka Kid Alex aka one-half of Puzique with D.I.M, has shot into the stratosphere since the 2007 release of Oi Oi Oi. Couple this with a body of remixes that reads longer than a Bill of Rights and it’s no wonder we’re super-excited to have Germany’s answer to Ed Banger back in Oz! Now a festival favourite across the globe, Boys Noize is set to weave a path of electronic destruction across Europe and North America with A-Trak on the Attack of the Uni-Bros Tour in the coming months… We can’t wait to Dance Dance Dance again.
SWITCH
Famed father of fidget and head-honcho of Dubsided, Switch, the man with more pseudonyms than days of the week, hardly needs an introduction. The genius behind all-time classics A Bit Patchy and Get Ya Dub On, Switch divides his time between production-work for the likes of M.I.A, Santogold and Missy Elliot and remixing the likes of well, every Artist residing in the Northern Hemisphere including Klaxons, The Chemical Brothers, Mika, Nine Inch Nails and P.Diddy. In his spare time he likes to teach Herve and Duke Dumont about the meaning of life.
A-TRAK
Since buying turntables with his bar Mitzvah money, A-Trak, the baseball-cap wearing, moustache-less Macklovitch brother, hasn’t looked back. Winning the highly-coveted World DMC Championships before he even had a hair down there, this self-confessed sneaker-freak has gone on to work on and off the court with the American Boy, Kanye West, produce the rap-tastic Kid Sister album and co-found the very buzz-worthy Fools Gold record label with Nick Catchdubs. In recent times he has layed down some doper-than-dope remixes of Boys Noize, The Count & Sinden and MSTRKRFT and in the process established himself as the man the kids look to when they wanna boogie-woogie.
LATE OF THE PIER LIVE
Born from underage trips to the sweaty dancefloor of Nottingham’s Liars Club, Late of the Pier have embarked on a mission to make 2008 their own on the back of debut release Fantasy Black Channel. Co-produced by Erol Alkan, who was swift to label this 20-something Donington quartet as “one of the most exciting bands out there right now,” the band’s first offering features the brilliant Space and the Woods, The Bears are Coming and Focker, all of which showcase their dark and chaotic hedonist’s brand of confrontational pop music and as a result have attracted remix attention from Switch, Joakim, Boys Noize and Grum. We certainly think that it’s the year of the Pier.
YO MAJESTY LIVE
Delivering the world a much needed soul-stirring through their hip-hop-infused new wave disco jams, Yo Majesty are three feisty femmes from Florida who have been rocking everything from Brooklyn warehouse parties to exclusive rooftop soirees and international festivals with their spicier-than-Salt-n-Pepa rhymes and bootylicious, bombastic beats. Regarded by many as a cross between ESG and Gangsta Boo, this trio, along with Thunderheist, are leading the North American surge in the punk-funk-crunk rap genre, with the very catchy Fuck That Shit an essential inclusion on anyone’s get-up-and-go-out soundtrack. Get ready boys and girls because it’s time to get those humps out!
BUSY P
With a following that rivals any rock star, the iconic Busy P may be considered the modern Messiah of electronic dance-music, and not just because he looks a lot like Jesus. With his fingers firmly in the Ed Banger and Justice pies, this cooler-than-cool Frenchman still finds time to drop some pretty fly tracks, with his recent collaboration with Murs on To Protect and Entertain, a sure-fire Summer hit and the perfect follow-up to his must have 2007 EP, Rainbow Man.
DJ MEHDI
Another notch in the Ed Banger Records’ belt, DJ Mehdi fits in the team like a match made in heaven. Mehdi certainly hasn’t let the grass grow under his feet, releasing two albums and remixing for our homebody Sam Sparro, as well as David Rubato, Busy P, Ghostface Killah and Steel Lord. Another favourite from Paris, Mehdi is mixing hip hop and electro; and is definitely more than just somebody.
ADAM FREELAND
Infamous for Now and Them and wanting your soul back in the early 00’s, Adam Freeland has proved himself to be quite the chameleon in recent years. Once the pioneer of nu-skool breaks, this Grammy Award winner has found a new calling in the European maximal electro movement. Citing Justice, Soulwax and The Glimmers as his current favourite producers, Mr. Freeland has teamed up with oh-so-hot-right-now producer Alex Metric and The Fury on his forthcoming How to Fake Your Own Life album, with the first single set for release in December – we counting the days!
FORT KNOX FIVE
Fort Knox Five- all the way from the U.S.A, are true to their roots. Producing a truly Funk, Break-beat, Brazilian and totally instrumental sound, their “…Funk for peace”… motto has seen them re-mix the likes of Bob Marley and The Wailers and add their stamp to the beats of A-Skillz, Krafty Kuts and Kraak and Smaak. Having also played tour DJ for Gwen Steffani and her Harajuku Lovers posse, FK5 have just announced that their debut album, "Radio Free DC", will be released in October! WOO-HOO!
CICADA LIVE
Cicada are often cited in the same breath as Tiga, New Order, Blondie & Daft Punk. They have been working tracks across the board that club kids, and rock kids ‘get’. With their retro-electro sound they have been re-mixing beats from Depeche Mode, New Order, The Editors, 13 Senses and more. And with their slew of singles such as Electric Blue, It’s all About You, and their new album due out in October, it’s no wonder how they earned their Global fan base.
